Mrs. Julie Cohn - Chair of Governors

• I have lived in Herefordshire for 23 years having previously lived in many parts of the UK and also in Kenya and Hong Kong. My husband and three children have thoroughly enjoyed living in this beautiful county.
• I qualified from The University of Nottingham as a Pharmacist and worked for many years as a Hospital Pharmacist including working at Hereford County Hospital. I stopped working a few years ago to help to look after our ageing parents.
• Having always being involved with many committees I became involved at a trustee level with Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust, and more recently the charities Yeleni Therapy and Support and Herefordshire Growing Point.
• My hobbies are gardening, cooking, walking, golf, travelling with my husband and visiting our children who now live in different parts of the UK.
• I am very proud to be Chair of Governors of Barrs Court School.

 

Ms. Jill Shearer

• Previously Chair of Governors at Kingstone Academy Trust
• A French graduate, I’ve spent my working life to date working in the agricultural sector, formerly in Marketing and now carrying out Single Farm Payment and livestock inspections for the Rural Payments Agency

 

Mr. Timothy Newsholme 

• Serving on the Board as a Community Governor
• Governor of Hereford College of Arts
• Retired Director of Art at Malvern College and Past President of the Common Room.
• Passionate about Art and Design with a career spanning 40 years dedicated to art education as Artist in Residence, Tutor. Head of Department at Clifton College, Cranleigh School and Malvern College.
• Accredited as Course Director of the BTEC Foundation course and introducing the course at Malvern College (the first school in the country to run the course)
• Senior examiner for A level Art and History of Art – OCR/EDEXCEL and a lead examiner for the International Baccalaureate.
• Served on National Committee for Art and Design as ATL representative.
• External Verifier for the Btec Art Foundation Course.
• Paintings exhibited in such venues as RWA, RBSA, Mall Galleries, White’s Gallery Covent Garden etc.

 

Ms. Nancy Thomas

Mrs. Di Vickress

  • Serving on the Board as a Staff Governor
  • Member of the Curriculum and Pupil Assessment Committee, and the Health and Safety Group
  • After leaving college in 1987 I worked at Puddlestone Court with boys who had emotional and behavioural difficulties
  • In 1990 I started working at Barrs Court School as a Teaching Assistant during this time I went to university to qualify as a Further Educational Teacher in 2007

  • Retired consultant paediatrician & paediatric endocrinologist
  • Worked for 33 years in Herefordshire; for 28 of those years also at Birmingham Children’s Hospital

  • Career-long interest in child protection, including 15 years as designated doctor for safeguarding for Herefordshire (High Sheriff’s award 2009)

  • Violinist in Hereford String Orchestra (of which I am chairperson) & fiddler & bandleader of doctors’ ceilidh band Cradle to Grave

Mrs. Laura Hone

• Previously worked in executive search in the voluntary sector gaining varied experience of the sector
• Became a Trustee of the former Herefordshire Learning Disability Trust (founded under the Barrs Court banner)
• Chair and Trustee of Herefordshire Growing Point. HGP is a charity providing social and horticultural therapy to vulnerable people of all ages, including those with learning difficulties, a range of disabilities and those who would like to continue gardening, but are no longer able to do so independently. HGP privileged to have some Barrs Court students at the sessions at Holme Lacy, all whom are immensely enthusiastic and engaged gardeners, and a pleasure to work with.
• Originally from Scotland, I worked in London for many years before moving to Herefordshire with my husband who is Herefordshire born and bred. I first came into direct contact with Barrs Court School when some of the students started coming to Holme Lacy for horticultural therapy. Herefordshire Growing Point was one of the founder members of the Herefordshire Learning Disability Trust and so as Chairman, I became a Trustee. While a Trustee of the HLDT, I was also asked to become a Member of the Board of Trustees of Barrs Court School.

Lt. Col. Charles Thwaites MBE

• Charles has links with Herefordshire going back to his birth, as he was brought up in the village of Eastnor, near Ledbury, throughout the 1950s and 60s.
• He joined the Army in 1969. He spent number of years in Germany where his regiment was equipped with Chieftain tanks, although he himself also saw active service in Cyprus, Northern Ireland and the Middle East.
• He was awarded an MBE following a tour as the speechwriter for the Supreme Commander of NATO. He left the Army in 1993 after nearly 25 years of service.
• He returned to Herefordshire and, with his wife Mandy (who herself lived as a child in Little Hereford), moved to a house and small farm at Pixley, near the Trumpet crossroads between Ledbury and Hereford.
• He has served as a churchwarden at Pixley, and as a parish councillor. For many years he also sat on the board of Herefordshire & Worcestershire Branch of the Institute of Management. He was nominated as High Sheriff of Herefordshire for a year in 2012/13, taking a particular interest in the opportunities for young people in the County. He visited Barr’s Court School on three or four occasions during his year in an official capacity.
• Two years ago he retired as Chief Executive in the UK of the international sustainable forestry charity, the Forest Stewardship Council.
• Charles and Mandy have two children: Andrew, a research scientist at Cambridge, and Victoria, who works as an NHS doctor in Oxford.
