16 - 19 Bursary

16–19 Bursary Fund – Financial Support for Students Year 12 - 14

The 16–19 Bursary Fund helps young people with additional needs stay in education after Year 11 by providing financial support for learning-related costs. This can include help with travel, meals, equipment, or specialist resources.

Who Can Get a Bursary?

There are two types of bursaries available:

1. Vulnerable Bursary

For students who are:

  • In care

  • Care leavers

  • Receiving Income Support, Universal Credit, or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

  • Also receiving Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

2. Discretionary Bursary

For students who don’t meet the criteria for the vulnerable bursary but still need financial help.
Each college sets its own rules — usually based on family income and individual needs.

What Can the Bursary Help With?

The bursary can be used to cover:

  • Transport to and from college

  • College meals

  • Books, equipment, or specialist clothing

  • Costs linked to work placements or university visits

Key Things to Know

  • The bursary does not need to be repaid

  • Students may need to maintain good attendance and behaviour to continue receiving support

  • Each college has its own application process and deadlines

How to Apply

  • Ask your college for a bursary application form

  • Provide any evidence requested (such as proof of income or benefits)

  • Applications are usually made at the start of the academic year, but students can apply later if their circumstances change
