Carers Assessment
Carer’s Assessment – Support for Families
Looking after a child with additional needs can be rewarding but also demanding. As a parent or carer, it’s important that your own needs are recognised too. A Carer’s Assessment is the way Herefordshire Council can help you get the right support.
What is a Carer’s Assessment?
It’s an assessment for anyone who provides regular, unpaid care for a child or young person with additional needs.
The assessment looks at how caring affects your life – including your health, work, family relationships, social life, and overall wellbeing.
It’s not about judging how well you care. It’s about understanding what support you might need to keep going and stay well.
What support could come from it?
Depending on your situation, a Carer’s Assessment may lead to:
Practical help with caring.
Information, advice and signposting to local services.
Respite or short breaks (time for yourself to rest or recharge).
Emotional support, counselling, or peer groups.
Help to balance work, education, and caring responsibilities.
Financial advice or guidance about benefits you may be entitled to.
Who can have one?
Any adult who provides unpaid care for a disabled child or young person.
Young carers (under 18 who care for a family member) are also entitled to an assessment of their own needs.
