Community Play Specialist
Community Play Specialist – Inclusive Play Support for Children and Families
At our school and college, we’re proud to work alongside a Community Play Specialist who helps children and families access play, leisure, and social opportunities in ways that are fun, inclusive, and supportive of additional needs.
What Is a Community Play Specialist?
A Community Play Specialist is a trained professional who supports children, especially those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), to take part in play and social activities.
Their role is to make play:
Accessible – physically, socially, and emotionally
Safe and engaging – tailored to each child’s needs
Supportive – helping children build confidence, friendships, and wellbeing
What Support Do They Offer?
The Community Play Specialist may help with:
Planning and running inclusive play sessions (e.g. sensory-friendly, adapted games, accessible environments)
Supporting children during play with 1:1 help, specialist equipment, or adapted activities
Encouraging children to try new things, build friendships, and develop social and communication skills
Working with parents/carers to understand each child’s needs, preferences, and comfort zones
Advising or training school staff and local play leaders on inclusive play practices
Sharing information about local clubs, leisure activities, and short break opportunities
Why This Matters?
Access to inclusive play and social opportunities can:
Boost your child’s emotional wellbeing, confidence, and self-esteem
Support the development of independence, communication, and teamwork
Give children the chance to relax, have fun, and explore new interests
How Families Can Access This Support
If you think your child would benefit:
Speak to your class teacher or Family Engagement Worker
They can help refer you to the Community Play Specialist or provide contact details
Work together to plan the type of play or leisure activity that suits your child best
Share any medical, sensory, or emotional needs so sessions can be adapted appropriately
