SEN Transport – Support from Herefordshire Council 

Getting to and from school can be challenging for some children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN). To help, Herefordshire Council offers transport assistance for eligible pupils, making sure they can attend school safely and reliably. 

What is SEN Transport? 

SEN Transport refers to travel support for children and young people who, due to their SEN, disability, or mobility difficulties, may not be able to get to school in the usual way. 

Support can include: 

• School buses or minibuses 

• Taxis with trained passenger assistants 

• Help with walking routes or travel training 

• Transport to the nearest suitable school based on the child’s needs 

Who Can Get Help? 

Eligibility is assessed by Herefordshire Council and may depend on: 

• Whether the child has an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) or other professional evidence of need 

• The child’s mobility or physical ability and whether walking or public transport is safe 

• The distance to school and whether it is the nearest suitable school for the child 

Even if the school is closer than the usual distance criteria, transport may still be provided if the child’s needs make travel difficult. 

How to Apply 

Families can apply online through the Herefordshire Council website. You’ll need: 

• Evidence of your child’s needs (e.g. EHCP, medical or professional reports) 

• Details about your child’s school and travel requirements 

Once reviewed, the Council will decide if transport is appropriate and what type of support will be provided. 

Things to Know 

• Transport is usually only provided for travel at the start and end of the school day 

• It does not cover after-school clubs, trips, or travel to second addresses 

• The Council decides the route, type of transport, and pick-up times 

• There may be a costs or contributions, especially for post-16 education or longer distances
