Sensory Occupational Therapy (Sensory OT) – Supporting Regulation and Comfort

Sensory Occupational Therapy helps children and young people who experience challenges with sensory processing, how the brain interprets and responds to information from the senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, movement, and body awareness).

Some children may be over-sensitive (finding things too loud, bright, itchy, or overwhelming), while others may be under-sensitive (seeking lots of movement, pressure, or touch). Sensory OT works to understand these needs and provide practical strategies to help children feel calmer, more comfortable, and ready to learn.

What Sensory OTs Do

  • Assess how a child responds to sensory input at home, school, college and in the community

  • Identify how sensory needs affect learning, play, self-care, and relationships

  • Develop personalised sensory diets – daily activities to help regulate children (e.g. movement breaks, deep pressure, calming routines)

  • Recommend environmental adaptations (e.g. quiet spaces, fidget tools, weighted blankets)

  • Support with self-care skills such as dressing, eating, and hygiene when sensory sensitivities make these difficult

  • Work on motor planning, balance, and coordination

Support for Families and Schools/College

  • Provide training and advice for parents, carers, and teachers

  • Help schools/colleges set up sensory strategies in the classroom (e.g. wobble cushions, ear defenders, visual timetables)

  • Contribute to Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) where sensory needs are identified

Why It’s Important

  • Helps children feel more regulated and ready to learn

  • Reduces stress and anxiety linked to sensory overload

  • Promotes independence in everyday life (dressing, eating, concentrating in class)

  • Supports positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing
