Topic Learning at Barrs Court School

At Barrs Court School, topic learning helps pupils learn about the world in ways that are practical, meaningful, and enjoyable. Topics bring different subjects together through shared themes, helping learning feel connected and relevant to everyday life.

What is Topic Learning?

Topic learning links subjects such as:

  • Humanities

  • Expressive Arts

  • Science and Technology

  • Health and Well-being

  • Digital Competence

Rather than teaching these subjects separately, pupils explore them through themes and real-life experiences. This helps learning make sense and supports understanding, communication, and confidence.

How is Topic Learning Adapted for My Child?

Every pupil is different. Topic learning at Barrs Court School is delivered through three pathways so that activities are matched to individual needs:

  • Pre-formal – sensory, play-based, and experiential learning

  • Semi-formal – structured, practical learning with visual support

  • Formal – more structured learning with opportunities to record and reflect

Progress may be shown through engagement, communication, confidence, or independence – not just written work.

What Will My Child Experience?

Pupils may:

  • Take part in hands-on activities and practical learning

  • Explore topics through art, music, movement, and outdoor learning

  • Visit local places or take part in community projects

  • Work together with others and make choices about their learning

  • Build independence and life skills through real-life experiences

How Do Teachers Plan Topic Learning?

Teachers use a topic plan as a guide to help organise learning across the year. This plan is flexible and allows staff to:

  • Follow pupil interests

  • Adapt activities to suit different needs

  • Spend longer on learning that is meaningful

  • Be creative and responsive

Learning is shaped around the pupils in each class.

How Is Progress Shared?

Topic learning does not use formal targets. Instead, staff focus on:

  • How pupils take part and engage

  • How they communicate and interact

  • How their confidence and independence develop

Learning is shared through photos, short videos, observations, and comments so families can see what pupils are experiencing and achieving.
